Chapter 21

Blade

“Well?” Drummer tugs at his beard impatiently when I return.

I start talking before my ass hits the seat. “Gave me the basics. He employed her, fucked her, got her pregnant, made her get rid of the kid. Dumped her when his name started floating to the top.”

Prez’s eyebrows rise. “That’s it?”

Shaking my head, I refute it. “Nah, but she’s trying to palm us off with that shit. Oh, I believe that happened and she was tellin’ the truth, but I’d bet the fuckin’ ranch it goes deeper than that.”

With his fingers drumming on the table, Prez thinks aloud. “What you’ve already outlined wouldn’t look good for a family man.”

“He’s running on an anti-choice platform too. But if she came forward, who’d believe her story? She was his campaign manager, lost her job, and now she wants payback by throwing dirt.”

Prez asks questions, I answer them. His next doesn’t surprise me. “So, what do you think is at the bottom of this?”

“Something that smells bad, Prez.” I lean forward, putting my elbows on the desk and clasping my hands. “Got no proof, but it’s mighty curious how he’s emerged the front runner like he has. Luck was certainly on his side getting rid of his rivals. One dead, one has his reputation in tatters.”

“She mention anything about that?”

“I asked, but she evaded a direct answer. Fact is, Prez, she knows he’s payin’ us.”

“Shame you ever told her that.”

I straighten my shoulders accepting the well-earned criticism. Can’t argue with his observation. “What’s done is done, Prez. The long and short of it? While we’re taking his money, she isn’t going to trust us.” Breaking off, I sigh. “She believes the reputation we’ve got, the one we can’t shake off. Reckon she’s fingering us as havin’ a hand in getting’ his rivals out of the way. She probably thinks any info she’s got could bring us down too.”

“No wonder she’s scared of us, Blade.” Drummer stands, and starts to pace. I give him the space he needs to think. After he’s crossed his office and back twice, he starts to divulge what he’s come up with. “She’s been through a lot. Obviously thought she’d found the man for her, was prepared to have his fuckin’ kid. Gave that up for a promise of a future which never materialised.”

“Hard to see how someone like her was taken in by him.” I’d have thought her more intelligent than that.

Prez shrugs. “Lawson’s clearly used to wearin’ a veneer. But like anyone acting a part, eventually the mask slips.”

When he gives me a pointed look, I reward him with a quick grin. Yeah, sometimes I let my enforcer’s mask drop. It’s not who I am, it’s the role I’ve fallen into. If I’m honest, my art is my coping method, but getting back to the man in question. “His wife can probably testify to that.” I pause, then add, “I think we should get Mouse diggin’ deeper.” My grin is now replaced by a frown. “Get all the details about what happened to those other politicians.
